The 2008 bond program is underway. In the first phase, three schools are of interest to constituents in the Wilmer-Hutchins area; the high school, middle school, elementary school, and the sports stadium.
The Wilmer-Hutchins High School will receive renovations totaling more than $20 million. The Kennedy-Curry Middle School will receive a drastic make-over, also totaling more than $20 million. The new Wilmer-Hutchins Elementary School will be built at a cost of about $14 million. Additionally, the Wilmer-Hutchins Sports stadium will receive a $1.7 million renovation.
The schools will open in August 2011. Wilmer-Hutchins area students can then stop taking long bus rides to get a quality education. They can stay near their neighborhoods.
I look forward to having even greater parent and community involvement when the schools open. I challenge the Wilmer-Hutchins alumni to start a scholarship fund to help graduating students from the high school go to college.
I appreciate the support given by the Wilmer-Hutchins communities to the Dallas ISD. Continue to support our students as they achieve academic success. I encourage you to serve as mentors and tutors in the various District 5 schools.

Wilmer Hutchins High School will reopen August 2011. Dallas ISD has planned to spend more tham $20 million to renovate the school and stadium.
Many others have been confused about the school opening. Please note, Wilmer-Hutchins ISD will not reopen. The Wilmer Hutchins High School is part of the Dallas ISD.
While we are working to improve A. Maceo Smith, I am also working to make sure we do not close the school. I have been talking with Dr. Hinojosa and Leslie Williams regularly about the progress at the school. They have assured me that the current leadership will turn the school around. Based on their plan, I anticipate A. Maceo Smith being rated Academically Acceptable in May.
I appreciate your support for the Wilmer Hutchins High School communities.
I am so happy to know that Wilmer-Hutchins will be opening up and will also keep that Most Famous Name. I plan on performing at half-time, at Wilmer-Hutchins first homecoming. How about some of the old band members and drill team members, cheerleaders all come back and perform that’s if you still go it, for 2011 Homecoming of WILMER-HUTCHINS? We should call it “Back by popular demand”. I am that Dancing Eagle that finished in 1983, and I still got it.
Paula,
I like your enthusiasm about the opening of Wilmer Hutchins High School. I would love to see a “throwback” half time for the first homecoming game in 2011. Look forward to groundbreaking event in a few months.
